Pfitzner: Sämtliche Lieder Vol. 3

PUBLISHED:
20 May 2019

Besprechungen

"The mezzo-soprano Tanja Ariane Baumgartner sings the first nine songs very well indeed. … Baumgartner goes on to sing the Sechs Lieder Op. 40 with great authority and feeling. The soprano Britta Stallmeister sings the rest of these songs with the clarity and personality that she brought to Volume 1, showing great emotion and variety of voice in the Sechs Liebeslieder Op. 35. The driving force behind the Naxos disc, and indeed the whole series, is the pianist Klaus Simon. As in Volume 1, he gives a first-class performance, which gets the best out of the singers. The recorded sound is very good." Stuart Sillitoe

„Hans Pfitzner began writing songs at the age of fifteen, his eventual extensive catalogue of compositions on his death in 1949 containing over one hundred lieder. Though born in Moscow, his upbringing and education were in Germany, and it was in the style of Schubert that he worked in his early years, largely choosing to ignoring the massive changes that were sweeping through music in Europe during the second part of his life. In that sense he was in the same musical world as his contemporary, Hugo Wolf. Like other composers in this genre, he was to gather individual lieder to form groups for publication. Most of the component parts are quite short, and it is at that point I fail to understand why Naxos are issuing these groups broken up over several discs. For instance, we have, on this release, just one from each of the two groups of ‘Vier Lieder’ opus 18 and 24, and two from opus 30. True, as the sleeve note writer points out, the first part of the disc is given to melancholy, death and sadness, the Frankfurt mezzo-soprano, Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, having little of cheer to colour her voice through the first nine tracks. The soprano, Britta Stallmeister, is more fortunate in the various moods of the Sechs Liebeslieder, opus 35, though she does find Pfitzner not overly kind to her as he takes the singer into the upper stratospheres. It is good that the disc brings Baumgartner back for the Sech Lieder, opus 40, where the words offer her some happiness, and finally an unpublished brief song from his teenage years, Die schlanke Wasserlilie. In the folk-song inspired Weihnachtslied Stallmeister is joined briefly by young choristers from a Freiberg church. Throughout the singers enjoy the very accommodating accompaniment from Klaus Simon.“ David Denton
